Working at a Brat Stand

Piggly Wiggly

Monroe, WI 53566

Job Description: I helped set up the Dakota Athletic Booster’s trailer in the morning.  Once set up, I helped make posters advertising the brat stand and hung them up outside Piggly Wiggly.  Soon enough, people started coming to buy food, so I was then in charge of taking their money, retrieving their drinks and chips, and serving them their brats.  In addition to this, I also had to answer any questions they may have concerning the Dakota Athletic Boosters.

Skills: Many skills were used during my hours helping out at the brat stand.  The most important skill was using people skills.  I had to be friendly and welcoming towards any customer that wanted to buy food from us.  This required me to strike up conversation and put my people skills to work.  Another valuable skill used during this volunteer time was time management.  I had to work efficiently in order to be ready in time for the first customer.  Yet another skill that was utilized was professionalism.  I had to be on top of things and know what I was doing so as not to look foolish in front of the customers.  If I was struggling with something, I had to act upon it in a professional manner.  These skills will all help me succeed with my life in the future because almost everything involves the previously stated skills.

Insight: I particularly liked this community service for a couple reasons.  First off, it enabled me to be outside and enjoy the nice summer weather.  Although it was hard work to set up the trailer, being able to be outside made it more worth it.  I also enjoyed the fact that I was able to talk to people.  Over the years I have come to realize that I prefer doing community service where I am able to interact with people, rather than be silent the whole time.  In the future, I plan on doing more community service like this.
