Working at the PTO Fun Fair

400 Campus Drive

Dakota, IL 61018

Job Description: To help the PTO’s Fun Fair run smoothly, I helped out.  I supervised a game called Penny Toss. The kids had to toss pennies onto a table, and they received a prize according to where the pennies landed.  This involved telling the kids how to play, retrieving the pennies that missed the table, and handing the kids a prize.  Afterwards, I helped clean up the gym.

Skills: Some skills that were used were patience, social skills, and responsibility.  Patience was applied when the kids didn’t understand how to play or when they repeatedly missed the table, causing the pennies to roll everywhere.  Social skills were used constantly throughout the entire night, as I was talking to kids and parents alike.  Responsibility was employed because there was no one else to help me run the game.  It was my responsibility to make sure nothing went wrong and to keep the game functioning.

Insight: This particular type of community service is not necessarily for me.  Although I like kids, I can only tolerate them for a little while before they become more of a nuisance.  I still had fun, but I learned that I prefer community service that deals with older people.  However, I was able to talk to people, which I enjoyed a great deal.
